St George's Day Parade

St George’s Day Parade

Held in Sissinghurst

The Weald District Scouts St George's Day Parade was held on Sunday, 25th May, in Sissinghurst.

St George is the patron saint of Scouting so the Sunday nearest to St. George's Day has become an annual occasion for all Scouts in the United Kingdom to hold ceremonies when they reaffirm their Promise and acknowledge the Scout Law.

In beautiful sunshine, a piper led about 240 members, including 18 flag bearers, beavers, cubs, scouts, explorers and leaders, through the village to the church where a service was held.

The service was conducted by Revd Norris with help from the younger generation. There was an interesting take on the St George story by the Explorers. The District Commissioner, Nigel Piper, made some presentations to leaders, and Lord Mayhew thanked everyone for coming and the leaders for giving up their time by volunteering to run the Groups. A collection was taken and is to go towards buying a SHELTERBOX. 'ShelterBox' is an international disaster relief charity. The box will contain items such as a tent, tools, cooking equipment, blankets, mosquito net, children's crayons, pencils & paper. It will be sent to a region in the world following a disaster such as a flood or earthquake, where people suddenly become homeless. We will be able to track our box and find out who we help.

After the service the parade returned through the village, past a saluting base at the village sign. Sissinghurst residents and visitors came out into The Street to witness the spectacle.

Weald Scouts help with fundraising and take part in kindergarten grand opening

Hundreds of youngsters clutched Union Jacks and cheered as the Countess of Wessex dropped in to their village to open their kindergarten.

The Countess, the former Sophie Rees-Jones, flew into Horsmonden to open the new kindergarten building, which is opposite the village primary school.

It was the culmination of two years of fund-raising for the Locket Green group and the Frances Austen Memorial Trust, which owns and manages the site where the kindergarten has been rebuilt, at a cost of more than £300,000.

The Countess, who was accompanied by the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Sir Allan Willet, and Diana Morton, from the memorial trust, spent some time greeting primary school pupils who gathered outside to welcome her, and also delayed her leaving by several minutes to meet some of them again.

She toured the new building, which was constructed by WR Brown Building Contractors of Snodland, and also met six Cub Scouts and Beavers from the 1st Goudhurst Cubs and Brenchley and Matfield Cubs and Beavers – Joseph Rigby, Dominic Rigby, Liam Sheppard, Jonathan Asplin, Charlie Howden and Ollie Bignell – who had all raised money for the project themselves, from running a tombola stall to swimming 1,000 metres and collecting money with Santa’s sleigh around Horsmonden.
